Centre men stay hot defeat Thomas More, 76-53
The Centre College men's basketball team won its fifth straight game by defeating the Thomas More Saints, 76-53, on Tuesday, Dec. 17, in Crestview, Ky. The Colonels are now 7-1 on the year.
The lead changed hands 13 times in the first half alone but the Colonels took a two-point lead, 37-35, going into halftime thanks to freshman guard Jeff Mullaney's (Louisville, Ky.) three-point field goal with four seconds to go. Senior guard Ryan Crowdis (Louisville, Ky.) led all Colonels in the first half with 13 points. Mullaney finished the first-half with nine points. In the first half the Colonels were 15-30 (50%) from the field but were only 4-11 (36.4%) from three-point territory.
It was a tale of two halves tonight for the Colonels as they shook off their first half struggles to establish dominance over the Thomas More Saints in the second half. The Colonels opened the second half with a 12-2 run to pull away from the Saints. The Colonels never trailed in the second half and came away with a 76-53 win.
In the second half the Colonels shot 14-24 (58.3%) from the field and finally heated up from behind-the-arc shooting 7-12 (58.3%) from three-point territory. The Colonels finished the game 29-54 (53.7%) from the field and 11-23 (47.8%) from three-point territory.
Senior Kris Bentley (Pikeville, Ky.) went off in the second half where he scored 15 of his team high 18 points. Crowdis finished the game with 16 points, 7 assists and 4 rebounds. Sophomore centre Alex Lloyd (Lexington, Ky.) finished the game with a team high 11 rebounds. Mullaney finished the game with 12 points.
The Colonels improve to 7-1 on the season and will enjoy a holiday break before returning to action at home on Monday, Dec. 29, against Piedmont in the Papa Johns/Country Hearth Inn Tournament. The game against Piedmont is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm. Prior to the Piedmont-Centre game, Maryville College will play Hanover College at 5:00 pm.
