Guilford out-lasts Transylvania, 71-67
In the first round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament hosted by Centre College in Danville, Ky., Guilford College out-lasted Transylvania University, 71-67, in overtime on Friday, March 6.
Guilford and Transy went back and forth in the first half were the lead changed hands seven times. Guilford went up by one at halftime, 33-32, due to a last second lay-up by Guilford player Rhett Bonner. In the first half Guilford out-scored Transylvania, 16-4, in the paint and out-rebounded Transylvania by five, 15-10.
The second half witnessed the same intense back-and-forth play from both Guilford and Transylvania with neither team being able to secure a solid lead. Transy player Joey Verax sank two clutch free throws with no time remaining on the clock to send the game into overtime. In overtime Guilford finally pulled away from Transy and secured a solid four point in the last few minutes of overtime in route to the win.
Guilford was 25 for 53 (47.2%) from the field but only 3 for 12 (25.0%) from behind the three-point line. In the game Transy was 22 for 61 (36.1%) from the field and 14 for 40 (35.0%) from three-point territory. Guilford dominated on the boards out-rebounding Transy by 14, 42-28.
The leading scorer for Guilford was Rhett Bonner, who finished the game with 22 points and 6 rebounds. Four of Guilford's five starters scored double-digit points. In the loss Transy player Joey Verax scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 4 rebounds.
With the win Guilford is now 22-5 on the year while the loss drops Transylvania's final record to 21-6. Guilford College will now play Averett University in the NCAA second round game at host Centre College on Saturday, March 7. The game is scheduled to start 7:00 pm. |
