Playing the best team in the western standings of the SCAC, the Centre men's basketball team almost came away with an upset, but they could not hold on as they fell 66-62 in overtime to Austin College on Sunday, Jan. 31 in Sherman, Tex.

Austin started the game by scoring the first four points and they would hold onto the lead for the remainder of the first half.

Centre was able to stay close with the Kangaroos for much of the first half with the Austin lead getting no higher than 11 points.

The Colonels would go into halftime down by only six points with the score at 32-26.

In the first half of play Centre shot 33% from the floor and 78% from the free throw line, while Austin shot 42% from the floor and 33% from the free throw line.

Austin opened up the second half by jumping out to a 10 point lead with 16:51 to go in the game and a score of 40-30.

Centre gradually cut away at the lead for the remainder of the game and pulled within one point at the 5:02 mark after freshman Josh Crawford (Corbin, Ky.) scored on a layup and a free throw to make the score 50-49.

Junior Alex Lloyd (Versailles, Ky.) gave Centre the 53-52 advantage with 1:45 to go in the game after he hit a jumper.

The Kangaroos would take back the lead on the ensuing possession after Kola Alade made a layup. Austin would hold onto the lead until the 18 second mark when sophomore Dee Smith (Lexington, Ky.) scored on a layup to tie the game at 56-56.

Austin would have a chance to score, but Alade could not make his jumper as time expired.

In overtime the Colonels held the lead only one time, which was early on as Smith hit a three pointer to make the score 59-58 with 4:10 on the clock.

Austin then hit two jump shots to go up by three points. Senior Danny Noll (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) hit a three pointer with 1:22 to go in the overtime period to tie the score at 62-62.

The Kangaroos would go on to hit four free throw attempts to give them the 66-62 win.

On the afternoon Centre shot 35% from the field and 79% from the free throw line. Austin connected on 39% of their shots from the floor, while shooting 48% from the free throw line.

Crawford was the leading scorer for the Colonels as he had 16 points. Lloyd had 14 rebounds on the afternoon, along with two blocked shots. Mullaney and Noll each had four assists for Centre.

Alade had 16 points for the Kangaroos, while Spencer Burke pulled in six rebounds.

Centre will next take on DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. on Saturday, Feb. 6. The game will start at 3:00 p.m.
