History and Records
Centre's women's basketball program dates to 1904, when the Colonels began a tradition of excellence that continues today. Centre began intercollegiate competition in 1959 and the team has been regularly represented on All-Conference, All-South Region, and All-South Region Tournament teams. Two players, Shannon Collins and Susan Yates, were first-team members of the Kodak All-America squad in 1989 and 1990.
Eleven Colonels–Wendie Austin, Debi Bennett, Shannon Collins, Sarah Green, Angela Ice, Beth Johnson, Becky Jorgenson, Kimey Kyker, Cheryl Lewis, Jennifer Patterson, and Susan Yates–have scored over 1,000 career points, while Collins is Centre's all-time leading scorer, male or female, with 2,000 points.
The Colonels have been equally successful in league play, winning five of the last nine Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships (eight league titles overall) and making two appearances--under two different head coaches--in the NCAA Division III Final Four. In 1988-89 under Lea Wise, the Colonels joined their male counterparts in the Division III Final Four Championship and hosted the tournament in Danville, finishing third in the nation. Centre made a return appearance to the Final Four in 1989-90 under Cindy Noble-Hauserman, losing in the semifinals. The team also qualified for the NCAA playoffs in 1987 and 1988.
