Thomas More tops Centre women 58-45

One day after winning its season-opener for the third consecutive season, the Centre College women's basketball team dropped a 58-45 contest to Thomas More College, on the second day of the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic, hosted by Centre, Saturday, Nov. 18, in Danville, Ky.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 1-1 in the early going, while Thomas More improves to 1-1. It is also the third straight year Centre has followed a season-opening win with a loss.

The game was tight throughout the early going. A lay-up by freshman Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) tied the game at eight apiece just over five minutes into the game. Thomas More then proceeded to go on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead midway through the first period.

Down eight points with just over four minutes left in the half, the Colonels fought their way back and cut the lead to three points when freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) made a lay-up to cut the Saints lead to 31-28 going into the half.

Thomas More continued to lead in the second half and pushed the lead to as many as 13 at 46-33 with 10:15 left to play. The Colonels cut the lead to six points (48-42), but would get no closer as the Saints pushed the lead back to 13 for the 58-45 win.

Goodman led all scorers pouring in 17 points on seven of eight shooting. Junior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) scored eight points and Claunch added seven points in the loss.

For their efforts in the two games, Goodman and sophomore guard Alison Denbow were named to the all-classic team.

The Saints' Kristen Humphrey led three Thomas More players in double figures scoring 15 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Megan Wood and Alex Gee added 11 points each in the win.

Sewanee-the University of the South won the earlier game of the day 64-56 over Spalding University. Steffi Renninger and Dani Pettay scored 12 points each for Sewanee, while Kristen Pendelton scored a game-high 18 points to lead Spadling.

Centre will next travel to Maryville, Tenn. for its first road game of the season. The Colonels will play Maryville College at 6 p.m.
