Centre women fall to Thomas More again

For the second time in a week, the Centre College women's basketball team played Thomas More College and lost 64-47, this time at the 5th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic, hosted by Thomas More, Saturday, Nov. 24, in Crestview Hills, Ky.

The Colonels fall to 1-3 overall, while thomas More improves to 2-1. The two teams also met one week ago at the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic, hosted by Centre. The Saints won that game 58-45 in Danville, Ky.

Thomas More jumped out to a fast start, scoring the first 10 points of the game to take a 10-0 advantage less than three minutes into the game. The Saints controlled the first half, holding at least a four-point lead or greater the entire period.

Late in the half, freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit two free throws cut the lead to four points with less than a minute to play, but Alex Gee nailed a three-pointer with 0:25 left to give Thomas More a 30-23 lead going into the break.

The second half started much like the first as the Saints scored the first five points to push the lead to 12 points (35-23). The Colonels were outscored 19-5 in the first 9:15 of the second half to fall behind 49-28 and were never able to recover.

Thomas More led by as many as 26 points (62-36) before finishing with the 64-47 win. The Saints shot 56.0% (28-50) for the game, while limiting Centre to only 29.4% (15-51) from the floor. The Colonels were also out rebounded 38-27 in the contest.

Brooke Humphrey paced the Saints scoring a game-high 14 points on six of seven shooting. Amanda Link scored 10 points and Megan Wood added eight points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Goodman led Centre with eight points and four rebounds and sophomore guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) chipped in eight points and four rebounds in the defeat.

Centre will next play Cincinnati Christian in the consolation game of the Classic, Sunday, Nov. 26. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky.
