Colonels pound Cincinnati Christian 95-52
Sophomore guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) tied one record and set another as the Centre College women's basketball team exploded for a 95-52 win over Cincinnati Christian University in the consolation game of the 5th Annual Julie Costello Memorial Classic, Sunday, Nov. 26, in Crestview Hills, Ky.
Centre, which improves to 2-3 overall, posted its biggest winning margin (43) since the 1994-95 season, when the Colonels defeated Sewanee-University of the South 76-26 (50). The 95 points are also tied for the second highest point total by a Centre team during the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) era. Cincinnati Christian falls to 3-5 on the year.
The Lady Eagles scored the first two points of the game, but that would be their only lead of the day, as the Colonels went on a 24-4 run to take a 24-6 lead with 11:03 left in the first half. Centre continued to dominate the first half, pushing the lead to as many as 30 points (48-18), before going into the half with a 52-23 lead.
The second half saw much of the same, as the Colonels opened with a 9-3 run to push its lead to 61-26. The lead would grow to as many as 45 (78-33) before ending in a 95-52 win for Centre.
Freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led four Colonels in double figures with 17 points on seven of nine shooting. Freshman forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) scored 14 points off the bench. Freshman Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added 12 points and sophomore guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) scored 11 points.
Along with Denbow's 11 points, the sophomore guard also recorded nine assists and nine steals. The nine assists is a new tournament record, while her nine steals tie another tournament record.
Jen Stone led the Lady Eagles with 13 points, three rebounds and two steals. Rhonda Henderson added 12 points and four rebounds and Elizabeth Tudor grabbed a game-high eight rebounds in the loss.
For her efforts, Goodman was named to her second straight all-tournament team. She was also selected to the Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Classic team one week ago.
Centre will next begin its 2006-07 SCAC schedule, as it travels to Greencastle, Ind., Saturday, Dec. 2 to play DePauw University. The contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will start at 1 p.m. |
