Centre defeats Spalding again
After win the first meeting of the year between the two teams, the Centre College women's basketball team completed the season-sweep, defeating Spalding University 65-55, Wednesday, Dec. 13, in Louisville, Ky.
The Colonels, which won their season-opener over the Golden Eagles 66-61, improve to 3-4 overall on the year, while Spalding remains winless and falls to 0-10 on the season.
Centre led by 12 points after the first half taking a 34-22 lead into the intermission. The Colonels shot 46.4% (13-28) in the first period, including 54.5% (6-11) from long range. Spalding, on the other hand, shot only 29.0% (9-31) and made only two of its 15 attempts (13.3%) from beyond the three-point arc.
The Golden Eagles made a run in the second half outscoring Centre 33-31, but came up short. Spalding shot 41.7% (10-24) in the second half, while limiting the Colonels to only 30.3% (10-33).
Junior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) led the way for the Colonels scoring a game-high 16 points ang gabbing nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) and freshman guard Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) scored 14 points each in the win, and and sophomore guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.
Allie Graves led three Golden Eagles in double figures scoring 15 points. Kristen Pendleton posted 13 points and eight rebounds and Amy Etherton added 10 points in the loss.
Centre will return to action, Saturday, Dec. 16, when it travels to Lexington, Ky. to play Transylvania University. Tip-off for the non-conference game is set for 2 p.m. |
