Women's basketball drilled by DePauw 101-48
In the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opener for both teams, the Centre College women's basketball team fell to DePauw University 101-48, Saturday, Dec. 2, in Greencastle, Ind.
With the loss, the Colonels drop to 2-4 overall and 0-1 in the SCAC, while DePauw, which entered the game ranked seventh by D3hoops.com and eighth in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Poll, improves to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play.
Following a lay up by DePauw's Emily Marshall to start the game, freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) nailed a three-pointer to put Centre ahead 3-2. That would be the last time the Colonels would lead as the Tigers went on a 24-5 run to take a 26-8 lead with 11:12 left in the first half.
DePauw continued to control the game allowing Centre to make only nine shots (eight field goals and one free throw) the entire half, while sinking 33 ( 24 field goals and nine free throws) of its own to take a 60-19 lead into the break.
The second half wasn't much better as the Tigers led by at least 37 points the entire half before finishing with a 53-point win to extend its home SCAC winning streak to 27 games and its overall winning streak against league opponents to 17 straight.
Fourteen DePauw players scored at least two points led by Liz Bondi's 30 points on 11 of 12 shooting from the field and eight of eight shooting from the free throw line. Bondi also had four steals, three rebounds, two assists and one block in only 21 minutes of action.
Emily Marshall scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Gretchen Haehl added 12 points and four assists off the bench.
Goodman finished the game as the lone Colonel in double figures with 14 points, six rebounds and three steals. Freshman guard Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) scored nine points with two rebounds and two steals off the bench in the loss.
Centre will next travel to Louisville, Ky. to play Spalding University, Wednesday, Dec. 13. The Colonels defeated Spalding 66-61 back on November 17. Tip-off for the non-conference game is set for 6 p.m.
