Baldwin-Wallace doubles up Centre 82-41
Facing the third-ranked team in the country, the Centre College women's basketball team lost 82-41 to Baldwin-Wallace College in a first round game of the Zimmerman Memorial Classic, hosted by Wittenberg University, Friday, Dec. 29, in Springfield, Ohio.
The Colonels, which have now dropped their last two games, fall to 3-6 overall, while Baldwin-Wallace won its eighth straight game to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Centre committed nine turnovers and missed 10 of its first 11 shots in the first 9:38 of the game to fall behind 20-2. The Yellow Jackets continued to pour it on in the first half extending their lead to 32 points and taking a 48-16 lead into halftime. It is the third time this season, the Centre women have been held under 20 points in the first half.
The second half featured much of the same as Baldwin-Wallace opened the period with a 13-2 run to push the lead to 43 points (61-18). Centre did not have an answer. The Colonels pulled within 38 points, but could get no closer the remainder of the way.
The Colonels committed almost twice as many turnovers (23-12) as the Yellow Jackets and were also out rebounded by 16 (46-30) for the game. Centre also shot only 18.2% (4-22) in the first half before finishing 15-52 (28.8%) on the day.
Amanda Mondrach paced Baldwin-Wallace with 16 points and four rebounds to lead four Yellow Jackets in double figures. Selena Eskinazi-Budge and Steffani Jaworski each scored 14 points off the bench and Michelle White added 10 points in the victory.
Junior guards Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) and Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) and junior center Andrea Loveless (Murray, Ky.) scored eight points apiece to lead Centre. Vonderbrink also added five rebounds in the loss.
Centre will return to action, Saturday, Dec. 30 to play in the consolation game of the Classic. The Colonels will face the loser of the Wittenberg-Edison State Community College game at 12:30 pm in Springfield, Ohio. |
