Second half dooms Centre women in 81-67 loss

The Centre College women's basketball team was out scored 17-4 to start the second half and never recovered falling to Edison State Community College 81-67 in the consolation game of the Zimmerman Memorial Classic, hosted by Wittenberg University, Saturday, Dec. 30, in Springfield, Ohio.

The Colonels, which have now dropped their last three games, remain at 3-6 on the year, while Edison State, which finished third in the Classic, improves to 6-5 on the year. The game will not count toward Centre's standings or statistics due to Edison State being a two-year school.

Edison State opened the game scoring the first seven points to take a 7-0 lead. Centre answered with a run of its own scoring nine of the next 11 points to tie the game at nine apiece.

The score remained close throughout the next 10 minutes of the game with neither team leading by more than four points. Leading by two points with just over four minutes to play, the Colonels scored the next four points to take a six point lead (29-23) with 3:34 left in the half. Edison State fought back and pulled within two points (34-32) at the half.

Centre led in the second half until the 16:07 mark when Stacy Feathers hit a lay-up to put Edison State ahead for good. Edison State slowly pulled away pushing the lead to 12 points (51-39) with 12:18 left to play. Centre got within six points (66-60), but would get no closer, finishing with the 14-point loss.

Whitney Warvel scored a game-high 29 points on nine of 13 shooting, including making seven of her nine three-point attempts. Feathers finished with 19 points and Zimmerman added 18 points and a game-high seven rebounds in the win.

Junior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) scored a team-high 14 points off the bench to lead Centre. Sophomore guard Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists, also off the bench.

Centre will return to action, Friday, Jan. 5, when they travel to Atlanta, Ga. to play Oglethorpe University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference game. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.
