DePauw blasts Colonels in women's hoops
A 31-2 run in the first 12 minutes of the second half was more than enough to put the game away as the Centre College women's basketball team fell 77-46 to DePauw University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Saturday, Feb. 3, in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels fall to 5-13 overall and 2-8 in the SCAC, while DePauw, which entered the game ranked #10 by D3hoops.com and #11 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Rankings, improve to 19-2 overall and 9-1 in league play.
DePauw jumped out to an early 11-3 lead to start the game, but Centre responded with an 8-3 run to cut the lead to three points (14-11) with 11:35 left in the first half. The Tigers lead grew to 10 points, but again the Colonels fought back, pulling within six points (34-28) with one minute on the clock. A DePauw free throw and lay-up to close the half gave the Tigers a 37-28 lead at the intermission.
Centre could not buy a shot in the second half, missing its first 14 attempts from the field to fall behind 68-30 with just under eight minutes to play. The Colonels made only three shots from the floor the entire second half, including two three-pointers, and did not hit a field goal until the 6:31 mark.
Liz Bondi led three Tigers in double figures with 13 points and eight rebounds. Bridget Bailey scored 12 points with four rebounds off the bench and Kalei Lowes added 10 points in a win, which saw 12 different DePauw players score.
Freshmen guards Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre in the loss. Claunch was eight of eight from the free throw line and finished with 13 points while Goodman added 10 points and six rebounds.
Centre will next travel to Sherman, Texas, Friday, Feb. 9 to play Austin College. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 6 p.m. CST.
