Centre women drop fourth straight
The Centre College women's basketball team suffered its fourth consecutive setback falling to Hendrix College for the second time this season, 76-58 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Feb. 11, in Conway, Ark.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the SCAC, while Hendrix, which entered the game on a two-game losing skid, improve to 19-4 overall and 9-3 in league action. Centre fell to the Warriors 79-58 back on January 14 in Danville, Ky.
At the 14:47 mark in the first half, the scored was tied 8-8, but that would not last long, as the Warriors used a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead with 8:28 left in the first period. The lead would grow to 12 points (31-19) prior to the half ending with Hendrix ahead 34-24.
Centre cut the lead to six points (35-29) early in the second half but would get no closer. The Warriors took control of the game pushing the lead to as many as 24 points (64-40) before finishing with the 18-point victory.
The Colonels struggled offensively again, shooting only 26.7% (12-45) from the floor while Hendrix finished at 42.6% (26-61). The Warriors out-rebounded Centre 40-34 and posted 13 steals to the Colonels' one.
Hendrix senior Tori Huggins had a big game finishing with 17 points, seven steals, five rebounds and four assists. She also became the school's all-time leading scorer in school history in the final basketball game ever in Hendrix's Grove Gymnasium. Huggins currently sits at 1,767 career-points.
Bonnie Hicks scored 16 points and had seven rebounds. Lindsay Merritt posted 11 points and three rebounds and Amanda Morris added 10 points, five steals and five rebounds in the win.
Freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre with 22 points and seven rebounds. Goodman made only three of her 12 shots from the field, but hit 13 of her 17 free throw attempts. Sophomore guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman guard Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added eight points each in the loss.
Centre will return home to host Oglethorpe University, Friday, Feb. 16. The SCAC tilt will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
