Centre women notch second SCAC win
Freshman Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) made a lay-up with 0:02 left to lift the Centre College women's basketball team to a 61-59 win over Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 26, in Jackson, Miss.
The Colonels, which have now won two of their last three conference games, improve to 5-11 overall and 2-6 in the SCAC, while Millsaps falls to 3-14 overall and 1-7 in league play.
After sophomore guard Jennifer Marees (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit a jumper to give Centre a 9-8 lead at the 13:10 mark in the first half, Millsaps scored the next seven points to take a 15-9 lead.
A three-pointer by freshman guard Jessi Asher (Brodhead, Ky.) with 3:51 left in the half, pulled the Colonels within 26-25, but the Majors answered again, scoring the next five points to push the lead back to six points (31-25). Freshman forward Keonia Masterson (Stanford, Ky.) hit a lay-up with under 0:15 left to make the scored 31-27 in favor of Millsaps at the break.
The second half was close throughout with neither team leading by more than five points. Trailing 39-36, Centre used an 8-0 run to take a 44-39 lead with 11:50 to go. The Majors tied the game twice in the next 10:49 and then again with 0:20 to play, only to see Claunch hit a lay-up with two second left to win the game for the Colonels.
Millsaps out-shot (36.4%-33.8%) and out-rebounded Centre (41-33), committed 17 turnovers to a season-low 11 for the Colonels. Freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre with her first career double-double scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Masterson finished with 11 points and six rebounds off the bench in the win.
Three Majors scored in double-figures led by Chrystal Dickerson's 18 points and 12 rebounds. LeReina Adams also had a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds and Leslie Frese added 12 points in the loss.
Centre will next play Sunday, Jan. 28, when it travels to Memphis, Tenn. to play the Rhodes College Lynx. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 3 p.m. CST.
