Women's basketball falls to Rhodes 68-57

After winning its second Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game two days ago, the Centre College women's basketball team fell 68-57 to Rhodes College, Sunday, Jan. 28, in Memphis, Tenn.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 5-12 overall and 2-7 in the SCAC, while Rhodes snaps a four-game losing streak to improve to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in league play.

Centre jumped out to a quick start scoring the first eight points to take an 8-0 lead. The Colonels continued to play well pushing the lead to 16-3 with just over 15 minutes to play in the first half.

Ahead 18-5 with 14:20 on the clock, Centre missed its next 11 shots from the field and turned the ball over seven times as its 13-point lead disappeared and turned into a 28-20 lead for the Lynx.

Rhodes extended the lead to 10 points (36-26) with 1:32 left in the half, but the Colonels scored the final four points of the half to close the gap to six points at 36-30 at the break.

Centre opened the second half out-scoring the Lynx 7-3 in the first 3:27 to cut the lead to 39-37. That would be as close as the Colonels would get as Rhodes went on a 16-4 run to take a 55-41 lead midway through the second period.

The lead would grow to as many as 14 points three different times, but Centre had one last run out-scoring Rhodes 10-3 to cut the lead to seven (62-55). The Lynx scored six of the final eight points and finished the game with an 11-point win.

Ashley Farrell led all scorers with a game-high 31 points to lead Rhodes. Farrell also also posted six rebounds four assists and three steals in the win. Kristen Lytle, Chrystal Jessee, Becca Clarin and Rene Orth added six points apiece for the Lynx.

Freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) paced Centre with a season-high 25 points on nine of 17 shooting, including three of four from the three-point line and four of four from the free-throw line. Freshman guard Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and junior Centre Ande Loveless (Murray, Ky.) added nine points each in the loss.

Centre will next play DePauw University, Saturday, Feb. 3. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will tip-off at 3 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
