Strong first half propels Centre women to win

On the final day of the regular season, the Centre College women's team ended the year on a high note, snapping a five-game losing streak by defeating Sewanee-University of the South 63-56 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Feb. 18, in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which had fallen to Sewanee 68-53 in Sewanee, Tenn. back on January 7, end their season with a 6-16 overall record and a 3-11 SCAC mark, while the Tigers fall to 9-15 overall and also 3-11 in league play.

Centre jumped out to one of its best starts of the year outscoring Sewanee 20-6 in the first 10:03 of the game. The Colonels continued to control the game, pushing the lead to 23 points (33-10) with 5:21 left in the half.

The Tigers cut the lead to 18 points near the end of the half, but sophomore guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) nailed a three-pointer with time expiring to give Centre a 21-point (40-19) halftime lead.

The second half saw Sewanee slowly chip away. The Tigers pulled with 14 points (46-32) with 14:58 on the clock, only to see Centre push it back to 17 points (49-32).

Sewanee would not go away cutting the lead to 10 points (50-40) with just under 10 minutes to play. Trailing 56-43 with 6:21 left on the clock, the Tigers went on a 9-2 run to pull within six points (58-52), but that was as close as they would get as the Colonels hung on for a seven-point victory.

Freshman guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre with 18 points on six of 15 shooting. She also grabbed five rebounds, and added five assists, two blocks and two steals in the win. Sophomore guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) also finished in double figures with 11 points and five rebounds.

Dani Pettay was the lone Tiger in double figures. Pettay finished with a game-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds three assists and two steals. Rachel Miller scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds and Courtney Childress had a game-high 10 rebounds.
