Trinity holds off Centre women 65-60
One day after snapping its six-game losing streak, the Centre College women's basketball team fell to visiting Trinity University 65-60, in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Saturday, Jan. 20 in Danville, Ky.
With the loss, the Colonels fall to 4-11 overall and 1-6 in the SCAC, while Trinity improves to 10-6 overall and 4-3 in league action.
After the Tigers scored the first two points of the game, Centre went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-2 lead less than five minutes in. Trinity answered with a run of its own out scoring the Colonels 13-2 over the next 6:26 to go ahead 15-12.
The Tigers pushed the lead to seven points (21-14) only to see Centre scored the next seven points to tie the game at 24 apiece at the 4:07 mark in the first half. The two teams scored seven more points apiece the remainder of the period and went into the locker room deadlocked at 31-31.
The second half was tightly contested with neither team leading by more than five points until midway through. With the scored tied 44-44, Trinity ran off nine straight points to take a 53-44 lead with just under 10 minutes to play.
The lead would grow to 12 points (62-50), but Centre would make one more run, outscoring the Tigers 10-3 to close the game, only to run out of time andfinish with a five-point defeat.
Trinity finished the game shooting 45.2% (28-62), while grabbing 43 rebounds, including 16 on the offensive end. The Colonels shot only 35.7% (20-56) on the night and grabbed 38 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards.
Krista Prato Matthews paced Trinity posting a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds off the bench. Lauren Andrews scored 13 points and had seven assists, five rebounds and three steals and Meghan Scholbe also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds to go along with seven steals.
Freshmen guards Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Chrystal Claunch (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre. Goodman finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 21 points, nine rebounds and three steals, while Claunch scored 13 points and had six rebounds.
Centre will travel to Jackson, Miss. to play Millsaps College Friday, Jan. 26. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 6 p.m. CST. |
