Colonels fall 66-58 to Austin in women's basketball
Playing in its third consecutive conference road game, the Centre College women's basketball team fell 66-58 to Austin College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 18 in Hughey Gymnasium in Sherman, Texas.
The loss drops the Colonels to 5-7 overall and 2-3 in the SCAC, while the Kangaroos won for the second straight games to improve to 4-11 overall and 3-3 in league action.
Austin scored the first 13 points of the game and led 23-5 with 8:42 left to play in the first half. Centre fought its way back scoring 12 unanswered points to cut the lead to 23-17 at the 3:35 mark. The half finished with the Kangaroos out scoring the Colonels 10-6 to take a 33-23 lead into the locker room.
The second half opened similar to the first, but with Centre doing the scoring this time hitting five three-pointers, including three by senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.), to out score Austin 17-2 and take a 40-35 lead with 14:30 left to play.
That lead was short lived as the Kangaroos nine straight points to go ahead by four points (44-40). Austin extended the lead to seven points (51-44), but the Colonels answered again scoring five straight points to pull within two points (51-49).
That's as close as Centre would get the remainder of the game as the Kangaroos scored 15 of the final 24 points to earn the eight-point conference victory.
The Colonels shot only 27.6% (8-29) in the first half and finished the game shooting only 35.2% (19-54), while Austin shot 46.7% (21-45) for the game and out rebounded Centre 38-30.
Katy Williams led all players with 17 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists. Williams made only four of her seven shots from the floor, but hit nine of her 11 free throw attempts.
Maegan Fitzgerald scored 14 points and had three steals and three assists and Kayla Redden added 11 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Vonderbrink was the lone Colonel in double figures with 16 points - 13 in the second half. She also had five rebounds and two assists. Sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and junior guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) scored nine points apiece.
