Women's Basketball News

The Centre College women's basketball team was outscored 26-7 to open the game and never recovered, falling 86-63 to Birmingham Southern College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Jan. 11 in Birmingham, Ala.

The loss drops the Colonels to 4-6 overall on the season, while the Panthers improve to 10-3. The game will not count toward the conference standings because Birmingham Southern is in the first year of its four-year provisional transition from Division I to Division III.

Following a missed three-point attempt by the Panthers' Morgan Talbot, sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit a lay-up to give Centre an early 2-0 lead. That lead would be short lived as Birmingham Southern scored 26 of the next 31 points on their way to a 23-point halftime lead at 48-25.

The second half would not be any better for the Colonels as the Panthers extended the lead to as many as 36 (82-46), before finishing the game with a 23-point victory.

Birmingham Southern shot 51.6% (33-64) from the field, including making 16 of its 30 (53.3%) three-point attempts. Centre was held to only 28.6% (8-28) in the first half and finished the game shooting only 32.8% (19-58).

Reba Ross led all scorers with 20 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. She also had two assists, two steals and a block in 27 minutes of action. DeAndria Hilliard scored 19 points off the bench and Mallory Morring added 15 points in the win.

Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 11 points and three steals. Freshman guard Angelo Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.) scored a season-high 10 points off the bench.

Centre will next travel to Memphis, Tenn. Sunday, Jan. 13 to play Rhodes College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is slated to begin at 1 p.m. CST.
