Slow start dooms women's basketball team in 73-56 loss
Out scored by 24 points in the first half, the Centre College women's basketball was unable to recover falling to Colorado College 73-56 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 20 in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The loss, which is the second straight and third in the last four games for the Colonels, drops their overall record to 5-8, while their SCAC record falls to 2-4. Colorado improves to 8-7 overall and 4-3 in league play.
Centre made only six field goals in the first half, five of which were three-pointers, and two free throws to shoot only 23.1% from the field in the opening frame. Colorado, on the other hand connected on 20 of its 43 attempts in the first half to shoot 46.5% and take a 43-19 lead at halftime.
The Colonels shot better in the second half making 11 of its 28 shots (39.3%) and out scored the Tigers by seven points, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers shot 40.9% (9-22) to finish with the 17-point victory. Centre turned the ball over 20 times in the game, including 14 times in the first half to only 15 total for Colorado and was out rebounded 47-36 by the Tigers.
Paige Whitney and Melanie Auguste scored 17 points apiece to lead Colorado. Whitney also had 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Auguste came up one rebound shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and two assists shy with eight.
Liz Kolbe added 14 points and three steals and Eliese Hansberry also finished in double figures with 12 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) and sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) were the only two players to finish in double figures for the Colonels. Goodman posted team-high's in points with 13 and rebounds with six, while Vonderbrink added 12 points and four rebounds in the defeat.
Centre will return home Friday, Jan. 25 to host Millsaps College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will start at 6 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky. |
