Women's basketball team falls to DePauw 85-51
Out-scored 27-6 to start the game, the Centre College women's basketball team never recovered as the Colonels fell to DePauw University 85-51 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Saturday, Feb. 16 in Greencastle, Ind.
Centre, which had fallen to DePauw 80-55 earlier this season, falls to 7-13 overall and 4-8 in the SCAC, while the defending National Champion Tigers improve to 20-3 overall and 12-0 in league play.
DePauw scored the first 10 points of the game and held the Colonels scoreless until the 13:33 mark in the first half, when sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit a lay-up to put Centre on the board. Goodman then hit a jumper on the next possession to cut the lead to 10-4, but the Tigers then scored 17 of the next 19 points to push the lead to 27-6 with 7:24 left in the half.
The Colonels fought back with a 12-2 run to cut the lead to 11 points (29-18) with just over four minutes on the clock, but DePauw answered with a 9-3 run to close the half and take a 38-21 lead into the locker room.
The Tigers wasted little time in the second half putting the game out of reach scoring 17 of the first 19 points for a 30-point lead (55-25). DePauw pushed the lead to as many as 38-points before finishing with the 85-51 conference victory.
Centre shot 37.7% (20-53) from the field, while the Tigers finished at 48.6% (34-70). DePauw also forced 24 Colonel turnovers and converted them into 26 points, while also out-rebounding Centre 45-23.
Katie Mathews led four Tigers in double figures with 15 points in only 13 minutes off the bench. Cassie Pruzin posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go along with seven assists. Emily Marshall added 13 points and seven rebounds and Jenna Fernandez notched 10 points, six rebounds and five steals.
Junior guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) led Centre with a career-high 15 points off the bench. Rhule made five of her seven shot attempts on the day, including five of six from beyond the three-point arc. Goodman also finished in double figures with 10 points.
Centre will next play Oglethorpe University in an SCAC road contest Friday, February 22. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 6 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
