Centre women drop third straight, fall 80-55 to DePauw
Playing the defending NCAA Division III national champion, the Centre College women's basketball team dropped is Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC)-opening game 80-55 to DePauw University, Saturday, Dec. 1 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which opened the season with two wins, have now lost three straight games to fall to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the SCAC, while DePauw improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The Tigers scored the first two points of the game on a jumper by Jenna Fernandez to take a 2-0 lead and did not look back. A single-digit lead turned into a double-digit lead midway through the first half as DePauw never trailed.
Trailing by 19 points (40-21) at the intermission, the Colonels fell further behind in the second half. The lead grew to 30 points (51-21) as the Tigers opened the half with an 11-0 run. Centre would get no closer than 23 points the remainder of the game in falling to the Tigers for the eighth consecutive time.
DePauw out shot the Colonels 49.1% (27-55) to 38.9% (21-54), including a 20-6 advantage in free throws made. The Tigers also forced 22 Centre turnovers compared to only 12 DePauw turnovers.
Fernandez and Cassie Purzin paced the Tigers scoring over 20 points apiece. Pruzin finished with a game high 23 points, while adding five rebounds three assists and two steals. Fernandez tallied 21 points, four rebounds and two steals. Gretchen Haehl also scored in double figures with 10 points, five assists and two steals.
Sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) was the lone Centre player in double figures. Goodman scored 16 points with six rebounds, three assists and a steal in 32 minutes of action. Junior guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) added nine points, nine rebounds and three steals in the loss.
The Colonels will take a week off from game-competition for finals and then return to action Wednesday, Dec. 12 against Spalding University. The non-conference game will start at 7 p.m. in Louisville, Ky. |
