Women's Basketball News

Having struggled in the first half of its previous three games, the Centre College women's basketball team knocked down their first six shots, including four three-pointers, to open up an early lead and go on to defeat Hendrix College 77-64 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Sunday, Jan. 27 in Danville, Ky.

The Colonels, which snap their three-game losing streak, improve to 6-9 overall and 3-5 in the SCAC. The loss drops Hendrix to 10-8 overall and 4-5 in league action.

Centre opened up a 16-6 lead within the first minutes of the first half with sophomores Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) hitting two three-pointers apiece.

The Warriors cut the lead to six (18-12) with 12:58 left in the opening half, but were not able to get any closer. The Colonels forced 17 turnovers in the first half and took a 37-25 lead into the locker room.

The lead quickly grew to 19 points (46-27) early in the second half and would grow to as many as 25 points (60-35) before ending in a 13-point victory for Centre.

It wasn't the prettiest of games as the two teams combined to turn the ball over 50 times and commit 39 fouls. The Colonels shot 37.9% (25-66) from the floor, while Hendrix finished the game at 42.0% (21-50).

Goodman posted a season-high 23 points along with five rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead the Centre. Jones added 17 points and a team seven rebounds, while senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) chipped in 11 points with four steals in the win.

The Warriors' Christina Byler led all players with 34 points and 15 rebounds, including hitting 14 of her 18 free throw attempts. Chelsey White was the only other Hendrix player to finish in double figures with 12 points. Samantha Clark had 11 rebounds.

Centre will return to action Friday, Feb. 2 with a trip to San Antonio, Texas to play Trinity University. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will start at 6 p.m. CST.
