Women's basketball drops third straight
The Centre College women's basketball team fell 61-56 at the hands of Millsaps College in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game at Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky. on January, 25th.
The loss marks the third straight for the Colonels and puts them at 5-9 on the year with a 2-5 record in conference play. The win improves the Majors to 4-12, 2-6 in the SCAC.
The Colonels fell behind 4-0 to start the game, and would never lead in the game due in large part to a poor shooting performance. Centre shot only 22.6% from the field in the first half, and finished the game shooting only 30.4%.
After trailing 30-19 at half time the Colonels were able to battle back and cut down the lead. With 1:40 to play, freshman guard Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.) broke free for two of her eight points and hit a lay up to tie the game at 56-56. That would be the last field-goal of the game for either team, and the final points Centre would score. The Majors hit five free throws in the final minute of the game to seal the 61-56 victory.
Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) and sophomore forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) led the way for the Colonels with 12 points each. Senior forward Lauren Clontz (Mt. Vernon, Ky.) added 11 in the loss.
For the Majors, Kristy Dowdy put up a game high 14 points going four of four from the field and hitting five of six free-throws. LaReina Adams was the only other Major in double figures adding 13 points of her own.
The Colonels will return to action in another conference game against Hendrix on Sunday, January 27th. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky. |
