Colonels drop SCAC game to Oglethorpe 87-66
The Centre College women's basketball team led by eight points at halftime, but was out-scored 56-27 in the second half to fall to Oglethorpe University 87-66 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Friday, Feb. 22 in Atlanta, Ga.
The loss, drops the Colonels record to 7-14 overall and 4-9 in the SCAC, while the Stormy Petrals improve to 21-3 overall and 11-2 in league play.
With the score tied at 17 with 11:03 left in the first half, Centre scored seven unanswered points to take a 24-17 lead. Down six points (34-28) with 3:09 in the period, Oglethorpe cut the lead to three-points, but a three-pointer by sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and a jumper by junior guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) gave the Colonels an eight points lead (39-31) at the break.
Centre shot the ball extremely well in the half making 16 of its 26 attempts (61.5%), including seven of eight (87.5%) from beyond the three-point line, while limiting the Stormy Petrals to only 37.9% (11-29) from the field.
The Colonels' eight point lead quickly evaporated in the second half as Oglethorpe opened the half with a 29-4 run to take an 18-point lead (62-44) with 11:44 left to play.
The lead grew to as many as 26 points (80-54), before the Stormy Petrals finished with the 21-point conference victory. The shooting percentages were reversed in the second half as Oglethorpe shot 62.2% (23-37), while Centre finished at only 29.0% (9-31).
Katie Kulavic led four Stormy Petrals in double figures with 17 points. She also had six assists, five rebounds and two steals in 28 minutes of action. Tina Grace scored 14 points and grabbed six rebounds and Brittany Corbett and Anna Findley added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Goodman led all scorers with 18 points on seven of 14 shooting. She also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals in the defeat. Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) also finished in double figures with 12 points.
Centre will close out its regular season Sunday, Feb. 24 with an SCAC game against Sewanee-University of the South. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 1 p.m. CST in Sewanee, Tenn. |
