Oglethorpe too much for Centre women in second half
After playing a close first half, the Centre College women's basketball team could not keep up in the second half falling to Oglethorpe University 71-55 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest Friday, Jan. 4 in Danville, Ky.
With the loss, the Colonels fall for the fifth time in the last six games to drop to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the SCAC. The win is the 10th of the season for Oglethorpe as the Stormy Petrels improve to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in league action.
The game was tightly played for much of the first half. Trailing 18-15 at the 11:05 mark in the first half, Centre scored five unanswered points to take its first and only lead of the game at 19-18.
After sophomore forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) hit a jumper to cut the lead to 26-23, Oglethorpe outscored the Colonels 11-2 to close the half and take a 12-point (37-25) lead into the break.
Centre cut the lead to 11 points twice but could get no closer. The Stormy Petrels had a double digit lead the entire second half and led by as many as 22 points (54-32) at the 10:31 mark before ending the game with the 16-point victory.
Katie Kulavic led all scorers with 21 points on eight of 13 shooting, while also adding four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Tina Grace was the only other player to finish in double figures for Oglethorpe adding 12 points and five rebounds.
Jones and fellow sophomore Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) led Centre. Goodman scored 14 points and had four rebounds, two steals and two assists, while Jones recorded 12 points, three rebounds and three steals.
The Colonels will return to action Sunday, Jan. 6 to host Sewanee-University of the South. The SCAC game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and will begin at 1 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
