Centre women rally to win in double-overtime on Senior Day
With three seniors playing in their final home game of their career, the Centre College women's basketball team rallied from seven points down midway through the second half to force overtime and go on to defeat Rhodes College 67-64 in double overtime in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Sunday, Feb. 10 in Danville, Ky.
The win, which is the second of the season against the Lynx, snaps a three-game losing skid and ups the Colonels record to 7-12 overall, and 4-7 in the SCAC. Rhodes falls to 10-12 overall and 3-9 in league action.
Centre jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the early going, but the Lynx used a 14-4 run to go ahead 17-12 with 7:35 left in the first half. Rhodes pushed the lead to seven points (26-19) with just over a minute remaining and took a 26-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Colonels continued to trail for most of the second half, but down seven points (41-34) with 9:11 left in regulation, they fought their way back scoring 13 of the next 15 points to regain the lead at 47-43.
Down by four points (49-45) with 1:57 on the clock Rhodes answered with four straight points, including a lay-up with time running out to tie the score and send the game to overtime.
The Lynx scored the first five points of overtime, but again the Colonels would fight back scoring seven straight points to go back in front by two points (56-54). Two Rhodes' free throws with 0:17 on the clock pulled the two teams even once again. Centre had a last chance to win, but late shot attempt would not go and the two teams headed to double overtime.
Again, the Lynx jumped out to another early lead scoring the first four points of the second overtime period to go up 60-56, but once again the Colonels answered scoring the next nine points to go ahead 65-60. Farrell hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to two points with 0:15 left, but a Centre free throw and a missed three-point attempt by Rhodes sealed the win for the Colonels and the three seniors.
Centre finished the game at 32.3% (20-62) from the field, while the Lynx shot slightly better at 35.8% (19-53), but turned the ball over 26 times compared to only 18 by the Colonels.
Sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) had a monster game scoring a career-high 30 points and grabbing 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of her career. She also added four steals and two blocks in 40 minutes of action.
Sophomore forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) added nine points, three rebounds and two steals off the bench and junior guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) grabbed eight rebounds and had four steals in the win.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Feb. 16 with a conference road game against DePauw University. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 1 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
