Sophomores Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) combined to scored 45 of the teams' 67 total points as the Centre College women's basketball team defeated Rhodes College 67-56 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 13 in Memphis, Tenn.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 5-6 overall and even their SCAC record at 2-2. Rhodes falls to 6-7 overall and remains winless in league play at 0-4.
The Lynx scored the first two points of the game, but would never lead again. Ahead 7-6 less than five minutes into the game, Centre used a 14-2 run to push the lead to 21-8 with 11:16 left to play in the first half.
Rhodes made a run of its own, out scoring the Colonels 10-0 to cut the lead to 21-18 with just under five minutes remaining in the opening frame. Centre pushed the lead back to six points to take a 33-27 lead into the intermission.
The Colonels led by at least six points for much of the second half. Trailing 53-43 with 6:21 to play, Rhodes cut the lead to five points (55-50) with just over three minutes left, but would get no closer as Centre scored 12 of the final 18 points to completed the 67-56 victory.
Neither team shot the ball well as the Colonels finished the game only 34.6% (18-52) from the field, while Rhodes shot only 34.8% (23-66). Centre did, however, own a 42-33 advantage in rebounds.
Jones led all scorers with a career-high 25 points off the bench, 10 better than her previous high of 15 set last season against Oglethorpe. The sophomore forward connected on nine of her 10 shot attempts, including all five three-points shots.
Goodman posted her second double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. She also had five assists, three steals and a block in the win.
Becky Atnip led three Lynx in double figures with 21 points and five rebounds. LaKeya McGill scored 14 points and Cameron Whitaker added 13 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
Centre will return to action Friday, Jan. 18 in Sherman, Texas against Austin College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 6 p.m. CST. |
