Sewanee defeats Centre women 56-42 in regular season finale
In the regular-season finale for both teams, the Centre College women's basketball dropped its third straight game, a 56-42 defeat to Sewanee-University of the South in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Feb. 24, in Sewanee, Tenn.
The loss drops the Colonels to 7-15 overall and 4-10 in the SCAC, while Sewanee, which fell to Centre 66-61 in Danville, Ky. earlier this season, improves to 9-16 overall and 4-10 in league play.
The Tigers jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first six minutes of play, but the Colonels fought back with a 16-6 run to take an 21-17 lead with 5:16 to play in the opening period.
Sewanee out-scored Centre 7-4 to end the half, but still trailed by a point (25-24) at halftime. Both teams had troubles holding on the ball as the two teams combined to turn the ball over 27 times in the first half.
The game continued to be back and forth through the early minutes of the second half as there were three ties and three lead changes through the first 9:25.
With the score tied at 38 apiece, the Tigers scored 12 unanswered points to take a 52-40 lead at the 4:03 mark. The Colonels did not have an answer as Sewanee pushed the lead to as many as 16 points (56-40), before finishing with the 14-point victory.
Centre shot 39.5% (17-43) on the day and turned the ball over 28 times, compared to the Tigers 36.0% (18-5) from the field and 16 turnovers.
Anne Wills and Rachel Miller paced Sewanee. Wills scored 12 points with three assists, two steals and two rebounds and Miller added 11 points and four rebounds.
Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) was the lone Colonel to finish in double figures. Vonderbrink scored 13 points and had four rebounds, two assists and a steal in 28 minutes of action. Junior guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) added nine points and five rebounds.
Centre will now prepare to play in the SCAC Tournament, Friday through Sunday, Feb. 29-March 2 in Conway, Ark. |
