Women earn first SCAC win of season over Sewanee 66-61
The Centre College women's basketball team earned its fourth win of the season and its first in conference play defeating Sewanee-University of the South 66-61 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 6 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which did not win their fourth game last year until January 19, improve to 4-5 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC, while Sewanee falls to 5-7 overall and 1-2 in league play.
Behind 4-2 in the early going, Centre scored eight unanswered points to go ahead 10-4 at the 14:38 mark. Sewanee answered with seven straight points to cut the lead to 10-9, but the Colonels came right back to outscore the Tigers 17-5 for a 27-14 lead at the 7:11 mark.
Centre continued to lead throughout the first half and would enter the locker room with a 37-28 lead after 20 minutes of action.
The two teams battled back and forth in the second half with the Colonels continuing to lead by four points or more until late in the second half. Trailing by six points (54-48) Sewanee's Lauren Gulley nailed a three-pointer to make it a one-possession game.
Centre then went on an 8-2 run to push the lead back to nine points, but the Tigers came back and scored the next six points to make it a three-point game again with 1:18 to play. Sophomore forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) hit four clutch free throws down the stretch and the Colonels hung on for the five-point win.
Centre shot 44.0% (22-50) on the day, including 12 of 23 from the three-point line, while Sewanee finished the day 23 of 57 (40.4%). Both teams struggled from the free throw line. The Colonels made only 10 of 20 (50.0%) and the Tigers hit only nine of 21 (42.9%).
Sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) had a big game leading all scorers with 21 points on seven of nine shooting. Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) and junior guard Allison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) added nine points apiece in the win.
Anne Wills and Acacia Mack finished in double figures for Sewanee. Wills scored 14 points, while Mack tallied 13. Courtney Childress grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds in the defeat.
Centre will return to action Friday, Jan. 11 with a trip to Birmingham, Ala. to play Birmingham Southern College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 6 p.m. CST. |
