Women's Basketball News

The Centre College women's basketball team continued to struggle shooting the basketball shooting less than 35% for the 11th time this season in falling to Southwestern University 70-56 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Saturday, Feb. 2, in Georgetown, Texas.

The Colonels, which drop their fifth game in the last six, fall to 6-11 overall and 3-7 in the SCAC, while Southwestern improves to 10-9 overall and 4-6 in league action.

The first half was close throughout featuring four ties and four lead changes. Neither team led by more than five points until the 1:02 mark when Southwestern's Beth Thomas hit a lay-up to put the Pirates up 32-25. Centre cut the lead to three points (32-29), but Amanda Gordon hit a three-pointer as time expired to give Southwestern a 35-29 lead at the break.

The Colonels trimmed the lead to two points (39-37) early in the second half, but the Pirates quickly answered with a 10-4 run to push the lead back to 49-41.

That lead continued to grow as Centre turned the ball over 10 times in the second half, while making only seven of its 27 shot attempts (25.9%), including only three of 17 (17.6%) from beyond the three-point arc.

The Colonels pulled within seven points with 3:53 remaining, but would not score again as Southwestern scored the final seven points of the game to pull away for the 14-point victory.

Centre shot only 30.8% (16-52) on the evening, including eight of 30 from the three-point line, while the Pirates finished significantly better at 48.9% (22-45).

Natasha Azizi led three Southwestern players in double figures with a game-high 19 points. Azizi also had six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and a steal in 35 minutes of action.

Thomas finished with 18 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals, while Jessica Hoch added 10 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Sophomores Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) led Centre. Goodman posted 13 points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Jones chipped in 10 points with six rebounds in the defeat.

The Colonels will return home Friday, Feb. 8 to host Birmingham Southern College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to begin at 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
