Women's Basketball News

In the second meeting between the two teams this season, the Centre College women's basketball team dropped its fourth straight game falling to Spalding University 67-57 in a non-conference contest, Wednesday, Dec. 12 in Louisville, Ky.

The Colonels, which defeated the Golden Eagles 66-53 in the season-opener for both teams, fall to 2-4 on the year, while Spalding earned its second win of the season to improve to 2-6.

Centre dug themselves a hole early scoring only 15 points in the first half on six of 30 shooting from the field, including only one of eight from beyond the three-point line. Spalding, on the other hand, shot 46.7% (14-30) from the field in the first period to take a 33-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The Colonels shot better in the second half (40%, 12-30) and out scored the Golden Eagles by eight points (42-34), but it wasn't enough as Spalding hung on for the 10-point victory.

Melissa Beasley and Cee Cee Richardson led the Golden Eagle attack with double figure efforts. Beasley scored a game high 14 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Richardson added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) led three Centre players in double figures with 12 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added 11 points and seven rebounds and junior guard Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) had 10 points in the defeat.

The Colonels will travel to Franklin, Ind. Saturday, Dec. 15 to play the Franklin College Grizzlies. The non-conference game is set to start at 5 p.m.
