Vonderbrink leads Colonels past Transylvania 73-59
Senior guard Monica Vonderbrink (Danville, Ky.) scored a career-high 27 points and tied a school record by making six three pointers to help lead the Centre College women's basketball team to a 73-59 win over Transylvania University, Monday, Dec. 17 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which entered the game only 1-8 against Transylvania during the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) era, snap a four-game losing skid and improve to 3-4 overall, while the Pioneers falls to 4-5 on the season.
Vonderbrink did most of her damage in the first half scoring 23 of the team's 38 total points in the period on seven of 12 shooting, including five of seven from the three point line and four of four from the charity stripe.
The Colonels led by as many as 16 points (38-22) in the first half before taking a 38-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Centre defense also came up big in the first half forcing 13 turnovers and turning them into 12 points.
The lead grew to as many as 19 points on multiple occasions in the second half. Trailing 59-40 at the 8:41 mark, Transylvania made run, out scoring the Colonels 10-0 to pull within nine points (59-50) with 6:43 to play.
That was as close as the Pioneers would get as Centre answered with a 10-1 run to push the lead back to 18 points (69-51) before ending the game with the 14-point victory.
Both teams struggled to shoot the ball as the two teams combined to make only 41 of its 119 shots (34.5%). Centre finished shooting 33.3% (24-72), including 11 of 29 (37.9%) from the three-point line and 14 of 24 from the free throw line (58.3%). Transylvania was 17 of 47 (36.2%), including two of seven (28.6%) from the three-point line and 23 of 36 (63.9%) from the charity stripe.
Vonderbrink was the lone Colonel in double figures, finished the game eight of 15 from the field, including six of nine from beyond the three-point line and five of six from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds and four steals in 29 minutes of action. Her previous single-game high was a 23-point effort against Sewanee-University of the South December 3, 2005.
The senior guard joined Dee Minor in the Centre records books with six three-pointers made in a game. Minor accomplished the feet against Rhodes College February 21, 1993.
Transylvania was lead by Brittany Henderlight and Jasi Flynn. Henderlight scored a team-high 14 points and grabbed four rebounds, while Flynn added 11 points and four rebounds off the bench.
Centre will take some time off for the holidays and will return to action Friday, Jan. 4 for an SCAC contest against Oglethorpe University. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
