Colonels lose heartbreaker, 70-67, to Colorado College
The Centre College women's basketball team entered Friday night's game versus the visiting Colorado College Tigers having won five of their last six games, including two straight SCAC conference games. Unfortunately, the Colonels could not keep the magic alive losing a heartbreaker, 70-67, to the Tigers dropping their season record to 9-6, 2-3 in the SCAC.
The Colonels and Tigers battled in the first half where the lead changed hands twice and the scored was tied six times. At half the game was tied 30-30. Freshmen forward Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) led all Colonels in the first half with 8 points and 5 rebounds. Also, the Colonels bench attributed 10 points in the first half.
The second half witnessed the same intense play from both schools as the lead continued to change hands and neither team was capable of pulling away. Going into the game's final minutes Colorado College had built a solid six point lead but freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) rallied the Colonels. Prewitt scored seven points in the game's final minute including a huge three-pointer with :15 seconds to go to to bring the Colonels within one point, 67-68. The Colonels had a chance to tie the game in the game's closing seconds but Prewitt's three-pointer was blocked.
The loss drops the Colonels to 9-6 on the year, 2-3 in the SCAC. Colorado College is now 10-4 on the year, 4-2 in the SCAC.
For the game Prewitt led all Colonels with 24 points. Huter finished the game with 10 points and 8 rebounds. Junior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) continued her strong play and chipped in 19 points for the Colonels.
The Colonels return to action Saturday, Jan. 17, against SCAC opponent Austin College. Tip off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
