Women's Basketball News

Playing for the first time in 2009, the Centre College women's basketball team jumped back into conference play and fell 65-48 to DePauw University in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game, Sunday, Jan. 5, in Greencastle, Ind.

The win ups the Tigers' overall record to 9-3 and their SCAC mark to 2-1, while the Colonels have their three-game winning streak snapped to fall to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in league action.

Freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) opened the game with a three-pointer to give Centre a 3-0 lead, but DePauw answered with a seven straight points to go ahead 7-3.

Ahead 13-10, DePauw used an 11-0 run to extend its lead to 24-10 with 7:07 left in the opening period. The Colonels cut the lead to seven (25-18) with just under three minutes to play in the half, but went into the locker room trailing 30-20.

Centre opened the second half with a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 32-26, but an 11-1 run by the Tigers pushed the lead to 43-27. The Colonels pulled within 13 points (49-36) with 9:07 left in the game, but would get no closer.

Centre finished the game at 37.0% (17-46) from the field, while DePauw shot 41.7% (25-60). Both team struggled from beyond the three-point arc, combining to make only eight of 36 (22.2%) shot attempts.

Cassie Pruzin led the Tigers with 12 points and five assists. Katie Mathews scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds and Emily Marshall added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Freshman forward Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 15 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Junior forward Jenny Jones (Stanford, Ky.) added nine points off the bench.

Centre will return home to host Rhodes College, Friday, Jan. 8. Tip-off for the SCAC contest is set for 8 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
