Centre stuns #18 DePauw, 74-62
The Centre College women's basketball team stunned visiting #8 ranked DePauw University, 74-62, on Saturday Feb. 14, in Danville, Ky. The Colonels are now 16-7 on the year and 9-3 in the SCAC.
The Colonels went toe to toe with the Tigers in the first half and entered halftime tied, 38-38. In the second half the Colonels shifted into fifth gear and with ten minutes remaining the game had built a solid double digit lead.
Leading the Colonels against DePauw was junior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.). Goodman finished with a game-high 23 points and pulled down 6 rebounds. Prewitt finished the game with 18 points, 7 assists and 6 rebounds. Freshman center Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) provided the Colonels with a presence down low as she scored 8 points and pulled down 6 rebounds.
The Colonels were 24 for 55 (43.6%) from the field and a better 12 for 25 (48.0%) from behind the three-point line. The Colonels out-rebounded the Tigers by three, 34-31. The Colonels defense limited DePauw to a sub-par shooting performance as the Tigers shot 22 for 63 (34.9%) from the field.
Before 2009, the last time Centre had defeated DePauw was during the 2001-02 season. Also, with the win against DePauw the Colonels have won 9 SCAC games which is the same number of SCAC games won from the last three years combined (05-06 Centre won 2 SCAC games, 06-07 won 3 games, 07-08 won 4 games).
The loss drops the DePauw Tigers to 19-4 on the year and 11-2 in the SCAC. Before the loss to the Colonels the Tigers had not lost in 2009. The Tigers last loss, also a SCAC game, was on December 5 to Oglethorpe. In the defeat, Cassie Pruzin led the Tigers with 23 points and six rebounds.
The Colonels return to action on Friday Feb. 20 at home against SCAC rival Sewanee. Tip-off is scheduled for 8:00 pm. |
