Centre pulls away in second half for 70-61 win
Leading by only four points at the half, the Centre College women's basketball team led by as many as 20 points in the second half before finishing with a 71-60 win over visiting Maryville College, Tuesday, Nov. 25 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels improve to 3-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2002-03 season. The loss drops Maryville's record to 1-3 in the early going.
Centre out-scored the Fighting Scots 14-4 to open the game, but a 10-0 run tied the game at 14 apiece at the 10:19 mark in the opening period. The Colonels answered with a 12-0 run to go back in front 26-14, but Maryville chipped away and trailed by four at the intermission.
The Fighting Scots tied the game at 33 with 17:35 left in the game, only to see the Colonels go back in front on the next possession. Centre didn't look back pushing the lead to 10 points (47-37) and then to 20 (64-44) with just under seven minutes to play.
Maryville again chipped away, pulling within 10 points, but would get no closer as the Colonels finished the game with an 11-point victory. Centre shot 41.7% (25-60) on the night, while the Scots finished at 39.3% (22-56).
Freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) scored a game-high 20 points with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Fellow freshman Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) recorded her first career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds and junior Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added 11 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Natalie Munday was the only Maryville player to finish in double figures. Munday finished with 12 points and five rebounds. Jeanna Dalton and Alexis Rouvelas added nine points each in the defeat.
Centre will return to action Saturday, Nov. 29 with a game against St. Catharine College in the Julie Costello Memorial Classic, hosted by Thomas More College. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. in Crestview Hills, Ky. |
