Women's Basketball News

The Centre College women's basketball team bounced back after two defeats to defeat the College of Mount St. Joseph 64-48 in a non-conference match-up Wednesday, Dec. 17 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels improve to 5-4 on the season, while Mount St. Joseph falls to 2-6 on the year. This is the quickest Centre has won five games since the 2001-02 season in which it took eight games to win its first five games of the year.

The Colonels got off to a good start jumping out to a 15-4 lead in the first six minutes of the game. The lead was pushed to 18 points (24-6) at the 9:18 mark and would move to 19 points (35-16) prior to ending the half with Centre ahead 35-20.

The Lions chipped away in the second half cutting the lead to eight points (39-31) five minutes in, but the Colonels responded with a 17-5 run to push the lead to 56-36 with 6:18 left to play.

Twelve different Centre players scored, led by freshman Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) who scored a game-high 19 points with nine rebounds and two blocks. Junior Keonia Masterson (Stanford, Ky.) added eight points off the bench.

Lauren Schaller posted a double-double to lead Mount St. Joseph. Schaller scored 17 points and grabbed a game-high 17 rebounds in the defeat. Megan Smith also finished in double figures for the Lions with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Centre will return to action following Christmas when it plays in the DePauw Classic Sunday and Monday, Dec. 28-29. The Colonels will open with Trine at 5 p.m. in Greencastle, Ind.
