Women's basketball tabbed sixth in SCAC poll
In its annual preseason poll, the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) has picked the Centre College women's basketball team to finish sixth in the 2008-09 season as voted upon by the league's head coaches.
The Colonels received 51 total points to finish six points behind Austin College (57). Oglethorpe University was chosen to win the league this year with 98 overall points and eight first place votes. DePauw University was second with 93 points and the remaining three first place votes.
Centre will look to build off of an 2007-08 campaign that saw the Colonels advance to the SCAC Tournament for the first time in five years. Head Coach Wendie Austin-Robinson now in her fourth season (17-51) will rely greatly on the play of junior guard Chelsea Goodman. Goodman, a Third Team All-SCAC selection a year ago, led the Colonels in nearly every statistical category - including points 13.2 (13th in the SCAC), rebounds 6.0 and assists 3.0 (ninth in the SCAC) per contest.
Trinity University was third with 81 points and Hendrix College came in fourth with 57 points. Colorado College was selected seventh (39), followed by Rhodes College and Southwestern University in a tie for eighth place (35), Millsaps College (28) in 10th and Sewanee-Univ. of the South in 11th place. Birmingham-Southern, in the second year of its four-year provisional transition from Division I to Division III will not count in the league standings. |
