Second half propels Centre women to 59-42 win over Rhodes
Following a low-scoring first half by both teams, the Centre College women's basketball team almost tripled its first-half output with 44 points in the second half to defeat Rhodes College 59-42 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) contest, Friday, Jan. 9 in Danville, Ky.
With the win, the Colonels have now won four of their last five to improve to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in the SCAC, while Rhodes falls to 8-5 overall and 1-2 in league action.
Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in the first half combining to shoot 28.9% (15-52), including only one of 13 (7.7%). Centre led 7-2 after 6:16 of play, but Rhodes went on an 8-2 run to take a 10-9 lead halfway through the opening period. The two teams combined for only 14 points the remainder of the half with Rhodes taking an 18-15 lead into the intermission.
The Colonels opened the second half out-scoring the Lynx 18-5 to take a 35-23 lead with 9:38 to play. Rhodes cut the lead to nine points (36-27), but would not get any closer as Centre pushed the lead back to double figures for good, leading by as many as 21 points before finishing with the 17-point victory.
Rhodes finished the game shooting 14 of 51 (27.5%) from the floor, including 0-11 from beyond the three-point arc, while the Colonels ended at 34.9% (22-63) on the evening.
Ten different players scored at least two points for Centre, led by freshman Lauren Huter's (Louisville, Ky.) 10 points. Huter also added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Junior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) and freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) added nine points each with Prewitt also notching nine rebounds, eight assists and five steals in the win.
Cameron Whitaker and LaKeya McGill scored nine points apiece to lead the Lynx. Whitaker also had a team-high eight rebounds and three blocks in the defeat.
Centre will return to action Sunday, Jan. 11 with another home game against Birmingham Southern College. Tip-off for the SCAC game is set for 3 p.m. in Danville, Ky. |
