Women's basketball wins SCAC opener, 52-50
After two straight losses the Colonels rebounded with a 52-50 win on the road against the Sewanee Tigers. This is the first SCAC opening win for the Colonels since the 2002-2003 season.
After the Tigers raced out to a 6-0 lead the Colonels went on a 20-6 run to take a commanding early lead in the first half. The Tigers late in the first half cut the Colonel lead to just seven but the Colonels stopped the bleeding and built the lead back up to ten going into half. The Colonels in the first half scored 24 of its 34 points in the paint.
The Tigers fought hard in the second half and took the lead from the Colonels, 41-40, with 11 minutes to go in the game. It was quite the finish for the young Colonels who only start one senior. The Colonels showed grit and determination on the road battling back to retake the lead from the Sewanee Tigers. In the last minute of the game the Colonels scored the game's last four points. In the game's closing seconds when the senior forward Rebecca Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) hit the game winning jumper. Rhule was assisted on the play by freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.).
The leading scoring on the night for the Colonels was junior Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) with 24 points. Goodman also recorded 6 rebounds and 6 steals in the game. For the game the Colonels shot 40.7% from the field while limiting the Tigers to an opponent shooting percentage of 35.7%.
With the win the Colonels improve to 4-2, 1-0 in the SCAC while the Tigers fall to 0-5, 0-1 in the SCAC.
The Colonels return to action Sunday, Dec. 7, on the road against SCAC opponent Oglethorpe. The game is scheduled to start at 2:00 pm. |
