Colonels open season with 87-61 win over Spalding
For the fourth consecutive season, the Centre College women's basketball team has opened the year with a win, this time defeating Spalding University 87-61 on the first night of the 2008 Country Hearth Inn/Lee's Famous Recipe Tournament Friday, Nov. 21 in Danville, Ky.
The Colonels, which have now defeated Spalding in it's season opener three straight years, improve to 1-0, while the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2 in the early going.
Centre raced out to a 13-2 lead in the first 3:21 and never looked back. The lead increased to 25 points (42-17) with 5:57 left in the opening period and was pushed to 28 points (55-27) lead at the intermission after junior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) hit a three-pointer just across the mid-court line as time expired.
Spalding pulled within 23 points with 15:30 to play, but would get no closer as the Colonels led by as many as 39 points (79-40) in the second half and finished with the 26 point victory.
Eleven different Centre players scored at least one point, led by seniors Rebecca Rhule (Lexington, Ky.) and Allison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.). The senior duo scored 15 points each to lead a balanced scoring attack.
Freshman Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in her first college game. Goodman and junior Keonia Masterson (Stanford, Ky.) added 10 points each, while freshman Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) scored eight points to go along with a game-high nine assists.
