Women's basketball falls 69-63 to St. Catharine
For the first time during the 2008-09 season, the Centre College women's basketball team finished a game on the losing end, falling to St. Catharine College 69-63 as part of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic, hosted by Thomas More College Saturday, Nov. 29 in Crestview Hills, Ky.
The loss snaps the Colonels' season-opening three-game winning streak and drops their record to 3-1 overall this year, while St. Catharine improves to 6-5 on the season.
With the score tied at 17 apiece at midway through the first half, senior guard Alison Denbow (Louisville, Ky.) knocked down a three-pointer to give Centre a 20-17 lead. Junior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) followed that basket up with a pair of lay-ups and the Colonels led 24-17 with 7:49 remaining in the opening period.
St. Catharine then used a 9-0 run to go back in front 27-25, but Centre answered with a run of its own, out-scoring the Lady Patriots 13-3 to close the half and take a 38-30 lead into the locker room.
The Colonels' Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) opened the second half with a lay-up an the lead was pushed to 10 points (40-30). Once again, St. Catharine began to chip away, eventually tying the game at 49 all with 10:32 left to play.
Trailing by one point (54-53) with 7:24 left, the Lady Patriots took the lead on a Courtney Milam jumper. The lead grew to seven points, but was cut to three (64-61) with 0:42 seconds on the clock. That was as close as Centre would get as St. Catharine scored five of the last seven points to finish with the 69-63 win.
Centre finished the game shooting 40.7% (24-59) from the field, while the Lady Patriots shot 39.3% (24-61). St. Catharine also held a 43-38 edge in rebounds.

Huter posted her second consecutive double-double of the season with game-highs in points (17), rebounds (12) and blocks (4). Freshman guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) and Denbow each added 13 points apiece as Prewitt also added five assists and three steals.
