Women's Basketball News

Playing its second game in as many days, the Centre College women's basketball team fell 73-51 to Thomas More College in its second game of the Julie Costello Memorial Classic, hosted by Thomas More Sunday, Nov. 30, in Crestview Hills, Ky.

Centre, which fell to St. Catharine in its first game of the Classic, falls to 3-2 overall, while Thomas More, the No. 7 team in the country, remains unbeaten and improves to 5-0.

The Saints scored the first 10 points of the game, hitting two three-pointers and a pair of lay-ups to open the first half. Thomas More pushed the lead to 21 points (35-14), before ending the half with a 19-point lead at 35-16.

The lead quickly grew to 29 points (47-18) in the second half as the Saints pushed the lead to as many as 32 points (65-31) before finishing with the 22-point victory.

The Colonels shot only 25.8% (16-62) from the field compared to Thomas More's 53.1% (26-49) from the field. Centre did force 30 turnovers in the game, while committing only of its own.

Nicole Dickman led the Saints with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Gee scored 13 points and had five rebounds and Jayme Thiem added 12 points, nine rebounds and six assists in the win.

Centre was led by sophomore Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.). Stovall scored 10 points and had three steals. Freshman Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) scored eight points and had five steals and junior Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) added nine points in the defeat.

For her efforts, freshman Lauren Huter (Louisville, Ky.) was named to the All-Tournament Team. Huter averaged 11 points and eight rebounds in the two games.

Centre will return to action Friday, Dec. 5 with its first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game against Sewanee-the University of the South. The game will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 8 p.m. CST in Sewanee, Tenn.
