Women's basketball dominates LaGrange with 84-43 win
The Centre women's basketball team dominated LaGrange College with a 84-43 win in the Colonels second game of the season. Centre took on LaGrange during the second day of the Country Hearth Inn/Famous Recipe Classic.
Centre opened the game with a five point run as senior Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) made the first two points of the game on a jumper and junior Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.) knocked down a three pointer.
The Colonels would go up by 17 points over LaGrange with 9:46 to go in the first half when Stovall hit a layup.
Centre would keep the large lead for the rest of the first half. The Colonels would build a lead up of as many as 22 points in the first half and at half time Centre would go into the break with the 36-15 lead.
During the first half the Colonels shot 44% from the field and 67% from the free throw line.
Goodman would open up the second half like she did the first half by scoring the first two points off of a jumper to put the score at 38-15.
Thomas More then responded with a jumper of their own to cut the lead back to 21. Sophomore Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) then hit a three pointer for the Colonels to make the lead 24 points.
Thomas More would continue to play hard and went on a seven point run after Prewitt hit the three pointer to make the score 41-24 and the lead was down to 17 points.
Centre eventually built the lead up to 31 points and wouldn't look back from that point on.
The Colonels would have the biggest lead of the game with 3:57 to go when freshman Bridget Winstead (Franklin, Tenn.) hit a three pointer to put the score at 82-37.
Thomas More continued to fight until the end as they went on a six point run late in the game to make the score 82-43.
Freshman Jenna Mire (Knoxville, Tenn.) would score the final bucket of the game with 29 seconds to go to make the final score 84-43. Every Centre player saw action in the game.
The Colonels shot 50% from the field and 71% from the free throw line in their second win of the season.
Prewitt led the Colonels in scoring with 15 points and assists with six. Junior Angela Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.) had seven rebounds on the night for Centre. Stovall and Winstead each had three steals.
Centre will take on Thomas More on Sunday, Nov. 22 on the final day of the Country Hearth Inn/Famous Recipe Classic in Danville, Ky. The game is set to begin at 3:00 p.m. in Alumni Gym. |
