Women's Basketball News

Sophomore guard Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) scored 37 points to set a new school single-game scoring mark and the Centre College women's basketball team defeated Southwestern University 80-50 in a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) game Saturday, Jan. 23 in Alumni Gymnasium in Danville, Ky.

With the win, the Colonels snap a two-game losing skid to improve to 11-6 overall and 6-3 in the SCAC, while Southwestern falls to 8-10 overall and 4-5 in league action.

The game was scoreless for the first 2:50, but quickly changed as the Pirates scored five straight points for an early lead. That lead was short-lived as Centre scored 28 of the next 30 points to take a 28-7 lead with 9:17 left in the opening period.

Of those 28 points, Prewitt scored 20 of them, including 12 from behind the three-point arc.

The Colonels continued to pour it on pushing the lead to 28 points (46-18) by halftime. Prewitt finished the half eight of 11 from the field and eight of eight from the charity stripe for 28 points.

The second half was much like the first as the lead grew to as many as 34 points before ending in a 30-point victory for the Colonels.

Prewitt was extremely efficient in scoring her record 37 points connecting on 10 of her 15 shots, including five of six from the three-point line and 12 of 12 from the free throw line. In addition to her scoring, Prewitt also grabbed eight rebounds and also added four assists and four steals.

The sophomore guard broke the record, which had been set by both Shannon Collins and Susan Yates. Collins scored 35 points on March 4, 1988 against the University of North Carolina Greensboro, while Yates scored 35 against Berea on February 13, 1990.

Senior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) finished also finished in double figures with 11 points for the Colonels.

Southwestern was led by Staley Mullins and Jessica Herbst. Mullins posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Herbst finished with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists.

Centre will take to the road Friday, Jan. 29 to play Colorado College. The SCAC contest will be played as part of a men's/women's doubleheader and is set to start at 6 p.m. MST in Colorado Springs, Colo.
