Women's Basketball News

The Centre women's basketball team had a five point halftime lead, but couldn't hold on as Thomas More College would make a comeback to win 77-72 on Sunday, Nov. 22 in Danville, Ky. Centre took on Thomas More in the final day of the Country Hearth Inn/Famous Recipe Classic.

Centre would score the first two points of the game as senior Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) made two free throws.

The game went back and forth for the remainder of the half with neither team going up by more than five points.

The Colonels would go into half time with a 37-32 lead after going on a five point run, which ended with a layup by sophomore Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) with six seconds to go.

Goodman would hit a three pointer eight seconds into the second half to increase Centre's lead to eight points.

Thomas More would respond on the ensuing play with a three pointer to cut the lead back to five points.

The Colonels would get the lead back up to eight points one more time with 16:20 remaining in the game after Prewitt hit a layup to put the score at 47-39.

Thomas More then went on an eight point run to tie the game at 47 a piece.

Junior Angela Tronzo (Bardstown, Ky.) gave Centre their final lead of the game after hitting a jumper with 13:31 to go in the game to put the Colonels up 49-47.

Thomas More responded as they went on a seven point run to go up on the Colonels 54-49.

The Saints continued to play well and eventually had a lead of 10 points. Centre played hard, but couldn't regain the lead as they were able to only cut the Thomas More lead to as little as four points.

The Saints went on to win the game 77-72 after shooting 63% from the field and 78% from the free throw line in the second half.

Centre had a tough shooting night as they were 38% from the field. The Colonels shot 77% from the free throw line.

Prewitt was the leading score for the Colonels, as she racked in 24 points and five rebounds. Goodman had a nice game as she recorded 22 points along with three steals and five rebounds. Freshman Chelsea Benham (Taswell, Ind.) also had five rebounds, while junior Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.) registered three steals.

Goodman and Prewitt were named to the All-Classic Team for their outstanding play over the weekend.

Centre will next take in-state rival Transylvania University on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in Danville, Ky. The game is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
