Women's basketball falls in a close battle to Transylvania 58-57
The Centre women's basketball team had a chance to win the game against Transylvania University on a last second shot, but the Colonels couldn't get the lucky bounce as Transylvania came away with the 58-57 win on Tuesday, Nov. 24 in Danville, Ky.
Senior guard Chelsea Goodman (Harrodsburg, Ky.) scored the first basket for the third straight game on a layup to put Centre up 2-0.
Junior Amanda Stovall (Louisville, Ky.) then hit a three point basket after Transylvania missed a layup to give Centre the 5-0 advantage. The Colonels five point lead would be their biggest lead in the game.
Transylvania would then hit a layup on the ensuing play to put the score at 5-2.
Goodman would get fouled and would hit one of two free throw shots and the score would become 6-2.
The Pioneers then went on a seven point run to make the score 9-6, but Centre would tie the score at nine a piece after sophomore Jane Goatley (Springfield, Ky.) hit a three pointer.
The game would then go back and forth and at the 3:48 mark the game would be tied for the fifth time after Transylvania hit their first of two free throws. The Pioneers would take the lead for the remainder of the half after Transylvania hit the second free throw.
Transylvania would get the lead up to seven points with 1:16 to go in the first half and at halftime they would go into the locker room with a five point advantage as the score was 33-28.
Sophomore Maggie Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) opened the second half with a layup to make the score 33-30.
Centre would then tie the game at 33-33 after Prewitt would score on another layup as she was fouled and then she hit the free throw for the three point play.
Transylvania would then take the lead again and build up a five point advantage. Centre wouldn't give up and tied the game up for the seventh time at 42-42 with 10:21 to go in the game after Goodman hit a layup and a free throw shot.
The Colonels would then take their first lead of the second half after Stovall hit a jump shot to put Centre up by two, which would end up being their largest lead of the second half.
The remainder of the second half would see the two teams go back and forth in lead changes.
Centre would take their last lead of the game with 1:11 to go after Goodman hit two free throw shots to make the score 57-56.
The Colonels would then pick up a foul with 17 seconds to go in the game. Transylvania was able to make their two free throw attempts to go up by one point.
Centre would have a chance to win the game, but freshman Elizabeth Prewitt (Mt. Sterling, Ky.) couldn't get the lucky bounce on her three point attempt and the Pioneers would go on to win the game 57-58.
Centre had a tough shooting night as they went 32.2% from the field and 66.7% from the free throw line.
Goodman had 16 points on the night along with nine rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Maggie Prewitt had 12 points, 12 boards, and one steal.
Centre goes on the road for their first away game of the season on Sunday, Nov. 29 to take on Hanover College. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m. |
