Season Preview

With 13 returning lettermen back, including all five starters, and the addition of a talented freshmen class, the Centre College women’s basketball team will look to move up the SCAC standings in 2007-08 and improve on a disappointing 2006-07 season.

Third year head Coach Wendie Austin-Robinson returns everyone from last year’s team which finished 6-16 overall and 3-11. Several freshmen and sophomores gained valuable experience a year ago and with another season of experience, the Colonels are poised to become more competitive and successful in 2007-08.

Centre will look to three guards to lead the way, led by sophomore Chelsea Goodman, a Third Team All-SCAC selection last season as a freshman. Goodman led the team scoring 14.0 points per game for the season, including a 15.6 average in conference play. She also pulled down five rebounds per game and hit 32 of 88 three point attempts. The sophomore guard ranked 13th in the SCAC in field goal percentage (41.8%) and was sixth in total steals with a team-high 49.

Joining Goodman in the backcourt will be fellow sophomore guard Chrystal Claunch and junior guard Allison Denbow. Claunch was second on the team in scoring at 9.3 points per game and steals with 44, while leading the team in assists with 56. Denbow was the only player on the roster last year to start every game. The junior was second on the team in assists and third in steals.

Sophomore Jenny Jones returns after starting 20 games at forward her first year. Jones averaged 5.1 points per game and grabbed 3.1 assists while playing 19.7 minutes per game.

A trio of seniors in Ande Loveless, Lauren Clontz and Monica Vonderbrink are back for their final season. The three combined to start 24 games and post 11.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

Juniors Jennifer Marees and Rebecca Rhule along with sophomore Kenoia Masterson also return after playing significant minutes last year. Masterson was second on the team with 4.6 rebounds per game, while Rhule and Marees combined to play an average of 34.5 minutes per game.

Centre will once again play a very competitive schedule in 2007-08, but with plenty of youth and experience returning, the future looks bright for the Colonels.
