Cross Country News

Competing against several NCAA Division I, II and NAIA schools, the Centre College men's and women's cross country teams placed 11th and 26th respectively at the Memphis Twilight Classic, Saturday, Oct. 6 in Memphis, Tenn.

The men's team placed 11th out of 42 total schools with a team score of 364. Drake University won the event with a score of 79, followed by Jacksonville State University in second (110), the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in third (126), Eastern Illinois University in fourth (191) and Saint Louis University in fifth (225).

Sophomore Jason Parks (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels finishing 63rd overall with a time of 26:11. Junior Joey Polio (Owensboro, Ky.) and senior Nate Blank (Frakes, Ky.) followed closely behind in 69th and 71st places. Polio ran a 26:20, while Blank finished in 26:22.

Freshmen Sam Morgan (Danville, Ky.) and Clinton Cahall (Georgetown, Ohio) rounded out the top five for the Colonels. Morgan placed 103rd in 26:44 and Cahall was 122nd with a 27:03.

Daniel Kirwa was the event's individual winner out of 341 total runners. Kirwa ran unattached and finished with a time of 23:30.

The women's team came in 26th out of 41 participating schools with a score of 646. Drake University won the team title with a team score of 97. Saint Louis University was second (99) followed by Harding University in third (119), the University of Arkansas-Little Rock in fourth (129) and Stephen F. Austin State University in fifth (134).

Freshman Regina Basconi (Johnson City, Tenn.) was the first Colonel across the finish line. Basconi ran a 20:25. Sophomore Lauren McCafferty (Newport, Ky.) and senior Christanna Schuman (Louisville, Ky.) placed 143 and 145. McCafferty ran a 20:50, while Schuman finished in 20:53.

Freshman Rachel Blank (Frakes, Ky.) placed 173rd overall with a 21:13 and fellow freshman Haley Gray (Lexington, Ind.) rounded out the top five for the Colonels in 175th place with a time of 21:14.

Arkansas-Little Rock's Whitney Kerth was the overall individual winner out of 329 total competitors. Kerth finished the 5k race in 17:22.

Both teams will return to action Friday, Oct. 12, to compete in the Wilmington College Fall Classic in Wilmington, Ohio.
